The small flowers of henna are used to produce a highly appreciated perfume. Henna grows naturally in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South Asia and Australasia. In Morocco, the Tazzarine region is very famous for its quality of henna, and the henna patches colour the palm grove a beautiful deep green, before becoming a decoration on women's hands.
During the wet season, the plant grows rapidly, producing new shoots, and then grows more slowly. The leaves gradually turn yellow and fall off during dry or cool periods. They do not thrive when minimum temperatures are below 11°C, the plant dies if the temperature is below 5°C.
It is used for many purposes:
Cosmetic and aesthetic: it beautifies, cleans and purifies the skin. It can also be applied to the hair to dye it, the feet and the hands. In Morocco, it is part of the arsenal of female seduction, in the form of mysterious signs on the hands or in the colouring of hair. According to laboratory analyses, it has antifungal and astringent properties. Its flowers are used in perfumery.
