Morocco has also made a name for itself with the discovery on its soil of a rare Martian meteorite, dating back 2.1 billion years. Nicknamed "Black Beauty", the celestial object, found in the region of Laâyoune-Boujdour and weighing barely 320 grams, made the headlines in specialist magazines at the beginning of 2013.

A meteorite is a natural solid body of extraterrestrial origin which has not lost all its mass during its passage through the atmosphere and which reaches the surface of the Earth or another star (planet, exoplanet, natural satellite, asteroid), the rocky or ferrous body not having been completely volatilized during the impact with this surface.

In Morocco, meteorite falls are frequent. The most recent one occurred on 22 October 2012 in the regions of Ighrem and Tagmout and was seen by many eyewitnesses. But the most important fall remains that of Tissint which took place on 18 July 2011 in the Tata region and which turned out to be a Martian meteorite. Other spectacular falls include the Tamdakht meteorite in the north of Ouarzazate, which was seen by a large number of people on 20 December 2008 from Agadir, Marrakech and the Tichka Pass, and the Benguerir meteorite which fell on 22 November 2004 and was felt by all the inhabitants of the town.
