The old Lalla Baytou Mosque

  • 22/06/2021

In Ait Rahal near Akka (located between Tata and Guelmim), the extraordinary Minaret of the Almoravid era (11th century) of the old mosque "Lalla Baytou Allah" of the kasbah of Agadir Amghar is undergoing rehabilitation works.

Restoration work on the "Lalla Baytou Allah" mosque in Agadir Amghar, under the supervision of architect Salima Naji, began on 21 February 2012 as part of an international partnership between the Directorate of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Morocco), the Commune of the kasbah of Sidi Abdellah ben Mbarek and the NGO CISS (Cooperazione Internazionale Sud-Sud). This operational phase has begun with a careful collection of historical and archaeological data, which should reveal historical information of great importance for local, regional and national history. Akka is known as one of the political and religious centres a few kilometres from the mining and caravanning city of Tamdoult, which organised the trans-Saharan trade in precious metals.

Eventually, the mosque of Agadir Amghar should be classified as national heritage through a joint action of the Directorate of Cultural Heritage, the municipality and the Al Agaya association for solidarity and social development.
